Why Sundays are different
Westminster Abbey is a Royal Peculiar — a working church directly under the Crown, not the Diocese of London. On Sundays it returns to its primary function: worship. Sightseeing access is suspended for the whole day and the building is reserved for services, of which there are typically five between 08:00 and 18:30. All Sunday services are free to attend; you do not get the multimedia guide route or access to Poets’ Corner during a service, but you sit inside the building under one of the highest Gothic vaults in Europe while the Abbey choir sings — by most measures the more meaningful experience.
Last entry, average queue and timing the visit
Last admission is 60 minutes before closing on every day except Wednesdays, where it is 60 minutes before the late close (so 17:00). One hour is not generous — it’s the minimum, not the recommended visit length. If you arrive at last entry, you’ll get through the Nave, Quire and Poets’ Corner, but vergers begin clearing the Lady Chapel and Cloisters 45 minutes before closing. Plan for at least 90 minutes inside and back-calculate from there.
Time-of-day footfall pattern
- 09:30 – 10:30: very quiet. Tour coaches don’t arrive until around 10:15.
- 10:30 – 13:00: peak. Expect waits at security and most-popular tomb stops.
- 13:00 – 14:30: second wave, slightly lighter than morning peak.
- 14:30 – last entry: emptiest period of the day for photography.
Seasonal hours: what changes through the year
The base timetable is the same year-round. Variations come from three sources: state events, religious calendar, and conservation work.
Easter
The Abbey closes from Maundy Thursday afternoon through to Easter Tuesday — typically four to five days of no sightseeing access. Services are open to the public.
Christmas
Closed 24, 25, 26 December and on 1 January. The Christmas Eve carol service is famous (and free), but seats are first-come-first-served and queues start three hours early.
Summer Saturdays
Officially the same 09:00 opening. In practice the queue forms from 08:30 in July and August. Pre-booked tickets bypass it.
State events and royal services
Coronations, royal weddings, jubilees, state funerals and Commonwealth Day Observance can close the Abbey at short notice. These are usually announced 6–8 weeks in advance on the official site. If your travel date is non-flexible, check the news page before booking.
Service times (free to attend)
| Service | Day | Time | Length |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning Prayer | Mon–Fri | 07:30 | 15 min |
| Holy Communion | Mon–Fri | 08:00 | 30 min |
| Choral Evensong | Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri | 17:00 | 45 min |
| Choral Evensong | Wednesday (spoken) | 17:00 | 30 min |
| Choral Evensong | Saturday | 15:00 | 45 min |
| Sung Eucharist | Sunday | 11:15 | 75 min |
| Choral Matins | Sunday | 10:00 | 45 min |
Doors typically open 30 minutes before each service. Arrive 15 minutes early to be sure of a seat in the Quire — the closest you get to the choristers and the best acoustic spot in the church.
Diamond Jubilee Galleries hours
The medieval triforium gallery is accessible only during normal opening hours and only with a £5 add-on ticket. The Weston Tower lift accommodates eight people at a time and on busy summer afternoons there can be a 10-minute wait at the base. Last access to the Galleries closes 45 minutes before the Abbey itself.
How long should you allow inside?
| Quick visit (Nave, Poets’ Corner, Lady Chapel) | 60–75 minutes |
| Standard self-guided with multimedia guide | 90 minutes |
| Verger-led tour + remaining self-guided time | 2 hours 30 minutes |
| Full visit including Galleries and Cloisters café break | 3 hours |
Days the Abbey is closed completely
- Every Sunday (sightseeing only — services run as normal)
- 24, 25, 26 December
- 1 January
- Maundy Thursday afternoon through Easter Tuesday
- Commonwealth Day (second Monday in March) and announced state services
- Occasional unannounced closures for funerals of national significance — refunds issued automatically
Editor’s recommendation
If your schedule allows, aim for a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. Book the 09:30 slot, do the self-guided route until 11:00, exit through the Cloisters for coffee in the Cellarium, and you’re back on the Tube before the lunchtime crowd arrives. On a Wednesday, you can also return for the 17:00 Evensong on the same day — your morning ticket isn’t re-needed for service entry.
FAQ
Is Westminster Abbey open today?
On almost all weekdays and Saturdays, yes. It is closed every Sunday for sightseeing, on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and on a handful of ceremonial dates. Confirm on the official site before you travel.
What time is the last entry?
60 minutes before closing — typically 15:00 on weekdays, 14:00 Saturdays, 17:00 on late-night Wednesdays.
Can I visit on Sunday?
Not for sightseeing. You can attend any of the Sunday services free of charge, which gives you inside access while worship is in progress.
How long does the visit take?
Plan for 90 minutes self-guided, or 2 hours 30 if you include a verger-led tour. Add 30 minutes for the Diamond Jubilee Galleries.
Are there evening hours?
Only on Wednesdays, when the Abbey stays open until 18:00. Choral Evensong on other weekdays at 17:00 is also a way to be inside the building in the late afternoon, for free.
Is the timetable different in summer?
No — the published opening hours are year-round. Queues and footfall are heavier from late May through early September, but opening and closing times don’t change.
